Functional Family Therapy (Gangs) Worker
Maternity leave cover from 1 July 2020 for 12 months.
Family Psychology Mutual is funded by the Youth Endowment Fund (YEF) to trial Functional Family Therapy (Gangs) in collaboration with the London Borough of Redbridge. This is the first team to be established outside of the USA. Successful projects may receive further funding beyond the initial grant period offered by the YEF (currently to September 2021), depending on the evaluation outcomes, or it may become locally funded.
An experienced, suitably qualified and motivated person is required to join our Functional Family Therapy (Gangs) team in Redbridge in a maternity cover capacity. This is an exciting opportunity to deliver an evidence-based intervention, working with the FFT developers and Family Psychology Mutual, a staff owned company. You will be working with young people at risk of gang involvement and exploitation, usually aged 10-14. The team will be embedded with the Redbridge Family Intervention Team (FIT) where we anticipate close interagency collaboration, joint working and the use of shared systems. This is an opportunity to work with a leading authority and a staff-led provider company developing new ways of intervening to protect and support young people and their families with complex needs and challenges. The work will largely take place in young people’s homes (when Covid-19 restrictions are lifted and this is deemed safe. In the interim, we are working virtually with families) and so the roles will require considerable flexibility of approach and the careful management of risks.
You may already have systemic experience or training but will be trained in the FFT G clinical model and supported through clinical consultation and a defined training plan. Any prior experience working within the FFT model is highly desirable. There will be opportunities to learn from our existing FFT sites in London, Norfolk and Suffolk. You will be highly orientated towards partnership working and alert to the risks and contextual safeguarding issues which gang involvement poses. The project is subject to an independent evaluation led by Greenwich University
This is an exciting opportunity to develop experience of a clinical adaptation and to use systemic skills to create and sustain change for young people and their families. You will have a clear desire to work in partnership with statutory and non-statutory agencies. Your commitment to young people will be clear as you strive for engagement with some of London’s harder to reach young people.
At the end of the maternity cover, there may be the opportunity to join our FFT teams in London, Norfolk or Suffolk. FPM has an expanding portfolio of work and we consider there to be opportunities for further services to be developed in the future.
For an informal discussion please contact Beck Dabscheck, Team Manager on 07535 443491 or Brigitte Squire, Clinical Director on 07787 105445.

Functional Family Therapy Child Welfare worker (with potential for Supervisor progression)
We are continuing to expand our successful FFT service in Norfolk. Therefore we are seeking an experienced and professional individual (social work, mental health nursing, psychology, family therapist) to join an established Functional Family Therapy Service in Norfolk. The team deliver Functional Family Therapy – Child Welfare (FFT-CW); an adaptation of the manualised FFT model for families in which child abuse and neglect is present. FFT -CW is a licenced, evidence-based programme with a strong track record. This is the second such service in the UK, so this is an exciting development for clinical practice. This is an outcomes-based contract for children 8-16 at risk of care entry (using a social impact bond structure), working to prevent children and young people entering care. We also work with a smaller cohort of young people who have entered care, for whom the service will manage a return home using the FFT-CW intervention. With therapeutic experience and knowledge of systemic formulations. you may already be on the journey towards accreditation as a family therapist or systemic practitioner (in which case we may help to support your training) or you may already be qualified. You will be joining a highly skilled, motivated team, currently growing, which will eventually comprise 6 Therapists and two Supervisors. The team has been operational since March 2019 covering the County and is embedded into the Social Care across the region. Working with the FFT UK Consultant, you will follow a structured pathway of continuous professional development in FFT-CW and family therapy practice. You will achieve fidelity to the therapeutic model through consultation, coaching and training supported by the Supervisor and FFT UK Consultant. You will take referrals from Norfolk Children’s Social Care and establish effective working relationships with both Social Care and partner agencies to achieve outcomes for families. If you are seeking an opportunity to make the best of your skills in engaging families and creating sustainable change with them, please apply. You will take an outcome-focussed approach with good sensitivity to dynamic risk, child protection, inter-agency working and clinical complexity.
As well as more recently qualified candidates we are interested in applicants who have aspirations to become an FFT CW Supervisor. Progression to Supervisor is dependent upon achieving fidelity milestones and clinical progression in the FFT CW model in year one. Supervisor training is well supported and requires travel to the USA for an ‘externship programme’ of development. Applicants with existing NHS pension eligibility may be able to retain access to the NHS pension if supervisor status is attained. Relocation support is also offered.
For informal discussion please contact Beck Dabscheck on 07535 443491.
